Horizontal Directional Drilling

HDD is a steerable trenchless method of installing underground pipes, conduits and cables in a shallow arc along a prescribed bore path by using a surface launched drilling rig, with minimal impact on the surrounding area. Horizontal directional drilling is done with the help of a drilling fluid which is a mixture of water and usually, bentonite or polymer. The fluid is continuously pumped to the cutting head or drill bit to facilitate the removal of cuttings, stabilize the bore hole, cool the cutting head, and lubricate the passage of the product pipe. It is the spent fluid which becomes a liquid waste and must be disposed of in an environmentally safe fashion.

BENEFITS OF R-T-STM

Lower Cost

  • Reduce or eliminate the need for expensive vacuum trucks
  • Eliminate the liability of transporting liquid industrial wastes
  • Solidify on site within regulatory requirements
  • Eliminate the cost to transport to transfer stations and go right to landfill
  • Eliminate the costs associated with liquid waste containment in environmentally sensitive areas
  • Eliminate the need to construct in-ground sumps

Environmental

  • Resulting solids will pass liquid leach test including BTEX and TCLP
  • Reliable encapsulation of contaminants in a complex solid
  • Meet regulatory requirements for a liquid industrial waste
  • Solidifies in minutes to eliminate leaching liability
  • Reduce carbon footprint with the reduction in heavy vehicles
  • Significant reduction in volume to landfill
  • Can have a waste volume reduction of >40% through evaporation
  • Low energy consumption

Simple to use

  • Fewer activities to manage
  • Less regulatory administration
  • Eliminates the requirement to transfer stations
  • Small footprint on site
  • Training and support through MetaFLO
  • Operator friendly
