Floridian Aquifer

Project Details
On December 10, 2007, the new R-T-STM process from MetaFLO was put into operation to solidify spent drilling fluids in the Florida Everglades, 40 miles west of Ft. Lauderdale.

The purpose of the project was to solidify 16,000 gallos on spent drilling fluid that was produced during the production of an aquifier storage and recovery well (ASR), allowing for solid disposal at a local landfill.

Project Specs
Mud weight: 9.75 lbs/gal
R-T-STM dosage @ 1.7% of liquid weight
MetaFLO’s PDM-300 Slurry Solidification Unit running at 80 gpm approx.
Actual run time of 3.5 hours
R-T-STM used: 2,600 lbs
Liquid weight: 16,000 x 9.75 = 156,000 lbs
Total solids transported to landfill was approx. 79 tons

Challenges
With the environmental concerns surrounding the Florida Everglades, there could be no liquid discharge. We were also under a stringent timeline to have the site restored to its original condition. Due to the location of the project, disposal of the spent drilling fluids was both costly and difficult.

Successes
By using the MetaFLO R-T-STM process we were able to bind up any containers and solidify the spent the drilling fluids in less than four hours. The speed and efficiently of the process allowed us to meet our deadline to be off-site and also eliminated any environmental concerns. By meeting the LDR standards, the solids could be disposed of at a local landfill.
